community liaison officer Erin nordrum shares story
"I received an email from a student in the school in sixth grade in around 2007 who was getting bullied and had a very tough time. I just received an email from her (in November 2015) and she's in college, going to be a police officer. She talked about how people always say, 'well, how did you think about this career,' and she'd say, 'oh, I just fell into it.' And she (said to me), 'well, actually, I didn't. It was because of you and how you would talk to me and say how all of this kid stuff isn't going to matter — you're going to be an awesome adult.'
I think that's what policing is about. I sent an email back to her and I said, 'of course I want to put bad guys in jail, but I also want to help people.' I've always thought about her, ten years later. I think the police department is a very community-oriented police department. That's the big thing that they do — stay out there. That's why we have liaison officers."
Officer Nordrum is the St. Louis Park DARE officer.
